Late Governor Edgar's Dispersal to Be Held Oct. 11-12

A total of 37 of Edgar’s horses will be presented across three sales in Indiana.

Late Illinois Governor Jim Edgar’s Thoroughbreds will be dispersed October 11–12 in Indiana, offering buyers the chance to secure horses from one of the Midwest’s most respected breeding programs. A total of 37 of Edgar’s horses will be presented across three sales in Indiana.

On Saturday, October 11, six Edgar-bred yearlings consigned by Breakway Farm, agent, will be offered in the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (ITOBA) Yearling Sale at the Horseshoe Indianapolis Receiving Barn. The sale begins at 1:00 p.m. Following the yearling session, 10 of his racehorses currently stabled at the track—including recent stakes winner Temple Paynter—will be offered in the Paddock Sale. Online bidding will be available through HorseAuctionsUSA.com.

The dispersal continues on Sunday, October 12, when the remaining stock will be sold just one mile from Horseshoe Indianapolis at 4772 N. Michigan Road, Fairland, IN 46126. Beginning at 2:00 p.m., the auction will feature:

  • Six broodmares in foal
  • Seven weanlings
  • Four additional yearlings

To accommodate attendees, food service, restrooms, and seating will be available.

Governor Edgar, who passed away September 14 at the age of 79, left a lasting legacy not only in public service but also in Thoroughbred racing. Introduced to the sport by his father-in-law, Don Smith, Edgar went on to build a successful breeding and racing operation. From 2003 through 2025, excluding partnerships, Edgar’s horses amassed more than $3.3 million in earnings with a record of 144-183-196 from 1,317 starts.

Nicks Auction Service will manage the dispersal sale. Pedigree pages and past performances are posted on Nicks Auction Service LLC Facebook Page and Horseauctionsusa.com
