The Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) is thrilled to announce the honorees for the 2025 White Horse Award: Chino Gudino, his son Luis Gudino, and Doug Adams from Mountaineer Racetrack.
Established in 2003, the White Horse Award honors individuals in racing whose heroic bravery and selflessness uplift those
around them. Their stories are universally recognized for remarkable courage, heroism, and selflessness.
This year, the RTCA White Horse Award reaches a historic milestone as it honors a remarkable trio--Chino, Luis, and Doug--for their exceptional acts of sacrificial service. This award acknowledges their unwavering dedication to caring for their dear friend, Dennis
VanMeter, a Vietnam veteran and horseman, during his final days battling cancer. By transforming Dennis's tack room into a peaceful sanctuary and providing constant companionship, they ensured he felt loved and respected. Their tireless efforts tending to his barn and horses, and in fulfilling his wishes, highlight the profound spirit of family within the racing community.
Chino, Luis, and Doug's selfless devotion not only eased a challenging time for Dennis and his family, but also brought peace and dignity. Their actions exemplify the best core values of the racing community--love, respect, and steadfast support for each other during life's most difficult moments. Honoring them with the RTCA White Horse Award rightfully celebrates their extraordinary compassion and the enduring legacy of Dennis VanMeter, who bravely passed away in September 2024.
A special tribute video showcasing their inspiring story and celebrating the winners was produced and premiered at RTCA's annual Night of Faith, Hope, and Love on Monday, October 28th at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, coinciding with Breeders' Cup World Championship week. Chino, Luis and Doug will be honored personally on Tuesday, November 18 at a scheduled trophy presentation ceremony at Mountaineer Park to celebrate with co-workers, families, and friends.
