In anticipation of wet conditions in Southern California, Del Mar has moved up the post time by half an hour for its Nov. 14, card to noon PT and canceled racing Nov. 15. The decision was made in the interest of protecting the welfare of horses, jockeys, and all participants, the track said in a release.
Rain is possible throughout the day on Friday, though it is expected to fall heaviest beginning in the early evening and continuing through the weekend.
Track officials have not yet made a determination regarding the Nov. 16 racing program. Once a decision is reached for the remainder of the weekend, Del Mar will release additional information outlining plans to make up canceled races as appropriate.
Saturday's cancellation marks only the third time in Del Mar's 88-year history that racing has been suspended due to weather conditions.
Historically, the wettest months in Southern California are from December to February. Los Alamitos Race Course and Santa Anita Park conduct meets during that period.
California has a strict inclement weather policy for racing, and the state's tracks will sometimes pre-emptively cancel racing when rain is forecast.
