Juddmonte's Mizzen Mast, a multiple graded stakes winner and successful stallion, was euthanized over the summer due to infirmities of old age, according to Juddmonte general manager Garrett O'Rourke. Mizzen Mast, a son of Cozzene, was 27.
The news was first reported by the Daily Racing Form.
Mizzen Mast was bred and campaigned by Juddmonte and trained for the latter part of his career by the legendary Bobby Frankel when he came to the United States. He started his career in France, where he won the 2001 Prix de Guiche (G3) and ran second in that year's Grand Prix de Paris (G1) for trainer Criquette Head. The son of Cozzene won five of his 11 career starts, including the 2001 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park for Frankel.
"It wasn't any (one thing), it was just more of an amalgamation of a bunch of things," Juddmonte manager Garrett O'Rourke told DRF of the stallion's death. "They're never easy decisions, but they're easier when the horse is telling you, 'Look, I'm ready.'"
Mizzen Mast was not only a force on the racetrack, he went on to sire 11 grade/group 1 winners such as 2022 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner Caravel, who earned nearly $2 million throughout her illustrious career; back-to-back Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (2012-13) victor Mizdirection; and Flotilla, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) in 2012.
Mizzen Mast began his stud duties in 2003 at Juddmonte Farm and was pensioned in 2021.
