Multiple grade 2-placed Originaire was represented by his first winner Jan. 18 as 3-year-old Original One proved best on debut in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race for $32,000 claimers at Santa Anita Park.
The California-bred ridgling sat a stalking trip behind dueling leaders for jockey Emisael Jaramillo and took command in the stretch, winning by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:05.73. The second choice in a four-horse field, Original One paid $5.20 to win for trainer Hector Palma.
Original One is a homebred for BG Stables, who have stood Originaire in California at BG Thoroughbred Facility for a private fee since 2021. Original One is out of the Good Journey mare One Eyed Mama, an eight-time winner from 21 starts.
Raced by BG Stables, Originaire was a consistent presence in Southern California graded competitions from mid-2019 through the end of his career in 2020. At 3, he was second in the 2019 Del Mar Derby (G2T) and Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T). At 4, he was runner-up in the 2020 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T) and John Henry Turf Championship Stakes (G2T) and was third in the Del Mar Handicap (G2T).
Through 20 starts, Originaire carried a record of 3-6-5 for earnings of $308,158.
