Shop Time became the first winner for his sire Shoplifted when the 3-year-old gelding picked up his initial victory in the $91,207 Jim's Orbit Stakes Feb. 14 at Sam Houston Race Park in his fourth start.
Shop Time, under jockey Floyd Wethey Jr., settled last behind a pace battle in a very compact field. At the quarter pole, he moved up three wide and pulled clear of the rest of the competition with fellow rival High Cinco, but dug in and wore the heavy favorite down in the final furlong to win by a half-length. At odds of 9-1, he won the non-black-type, 6-furlong race in a time of 1:12.19 on a fast track. Shop Time races for owners Jeffry and Julie Puryear and trainer Kevin Scholl.
Shop Time, bred by Asmussen and Woolsey Stables and purchased last year by his owners for $21,000 from the Texas Thoroughbred Association 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, is out of the Shackleford mare Sprinkle Time. The latter was a winner at 2 and 3, and has two foals to race, with Shop Time being her first winner.
Totaling earnings of $583,635 from 17 starts, Shoplifted captured the 2019 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park after placing in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) earlier in his 2-year-old season. He later ran third in 2020 in both the Woody Stephens Stakes (G1) and H. Allen Jerkens Stakes (G1) for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.
Shoplifted is by seven-time leading sire Into Mischief out of the Yes It's True mare Shopit. Shopit has produced five winners from seven foals to race, including eight-time winner Dakota Fred.
Shoplifted stands this breeding season at Valor Farm near Pilot Point, Texas, for $4,500.
