There's qualifying for the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Then there's running in the Kentucky Derby.
They are indeed two totally different things.
For the connections of the eight likely starters in the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby (G1) March 28 at Oaklawn Park, the race in one way, shape, or form will determine whether their 3-year-old will be running in the May 2 opening leg of the Triple Crown.
The 1 1/8-mile test offers 100-50-25-15-10 qualifying points to the top five finishers. Since 50 points has always been enough to nail down a starting spot in the Run for the Roses, a first or second on Saturday will punch a ticket to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.
Seven of the eight likely starters (after the defection of Napoleon Solo for the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) April 4) have 34 or less points and can use more points. Yet even for the one starter with 50 points, the Arkansas Derby carries much meaning.
While John C. Oxley's Silent Tactic has 50 points and can run in the Kentucky Derby even if he's unplaced Saturday, trainer Mark Casse is looking for a final confirmation that the son of Tacitus is ready for the ultimate test of class and stamina in the Triple Crown.
"Just having the points doesn't always mean you want to run in the Derby," Casse said. "We want him to perform well Saturday and show us that he deserves to be in the Derby. I've been in enough Derbies. I only want to go if I have a shot."
Silent Tactic certainly looked the part of a Triple Crown candidate when he was beaten a nose by Class President in the March 1 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn. Seventh early on in the 1 1/16-mile stakes, Silent Tactic engaged in a heated stretch duel with the winner, but lost the bob at the wire.
That runner-up finish accounted for 25 points and coupled with 20 from a win in the Southwest Stakes (G3) and five from a second in the Smarty Jones Stakes it elevated the son of the Gun Runner mare Magical Sign to 50 points and a safe haven on the points leaderboard.
Now Casse is looking for one more solid effort as a sign that Silent Tactic is ready for the 1 1/4-mile Run for the Roses.
"The nice thing is that he is in a position where we are not catching up," Casse said. "We're not trying to get him fit. He's at the top of his game, so we'll see if it's good enough."
Bred by Don Alberto Corporation, Silent Tactic sold for $500,000 from the Thorostock consignment at the 2025 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
For everyone else in the field, the points will hold the key to running in the Kentucky Derby. That includes the 3-2 morning-line favorite, Renegade.
Owned by Robert and Lawana Low and Repole Stable, the son of superstar stallion Into Mischief is ranked seventh in this week's edition of BloodHorse's Derby Dozen, but only has 25 points. A top three finish, and possibly a top four, could ultimately earn him a spot in the field of 20 for the Run for the Roses.
In the last three years, the cutoff for qualifying has averaged 41 points, with the all-time high being 45 points in 2023.
Bred by the Lows and purchased from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment for $975,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Renegade is coming off a 3 3/4-length victory for trainer Todd Pletcher in the Sam F. Davis Stakes that awarded him 20 points.
The Arkansas Derby will also be a litmus test for the Kentucky Derby hopes of the aptly named Litmus Test. Trained by Bob Baffert, the son of Nyquist has 34 points and is coming off a pacesetting third in the Rebel for "The Avengers" ownership group headed by SF Racing, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables.
BR Thoroughbreds, Lance Gasaway, and Magdalena Racing's Blackout Time was fourth in the Rebel while making his 3-year-old debut. The son of Not This Time , who was second last year in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) for trainer Ken McPeek, has 15 points and is looking at a top two finish, and maybe a top three, to stay in contention for the Kentucky Derby.
Redland Rebels (10) and Bricklin (6) are the only other entrants with qualifying points. The former is cross-entered in the Florida Derby (G1) the same day at Gulfstream Park.
