Former stakes-winning jockey Nelson Arroyo's transition to pinhooking has been a major success, culminating in a standout performance April 15 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. His sharp eye for talent and relentless work ethic paid off in a big way, most notably with a Life Is Good  colt (Hip 312) that commanded $725,000 from KP out of the Britton Peak consignment.

Arroyo purchased Hip 312 as a yearling for $275,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

"I loved him from the second I saw him," Arroyo said. "He was a big horse who moved real light; he was real light on his feet. He had all the right angles and he just had that presence."

The colt showed his speed during the under-tack show, blazing a furlong in :09 4/5.

Arroyo said when looking at horses, he does an "all show" at every barn he goes to, paying attention to physicals first, and pedigree pages second.

"We look at physicals, and every time I looked up, and I saw a good horse that showed speed and distance, it just happened to be (by) Life Is Good."

Arroyo said he was not at all surprised by the $725,000 that Hip 312 commanded during the second session of the OBS Spring sale.

Hip 312 was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm and Larry B. Taylor. He is out of the graded stakes-winning Tiznow mare Tiz Breathtaking, and hails from the family of grade 1 winner Shared Account.

About 150 hips later, Hip 472, a colt by Life Is Good out of the Empire Maker mare Artemis, sold for $450,000 to Amanda Gillman, agent. The colt breezed a furlong in :10 during the under-tack preview.

Arroyo scouted out that colt, bred by Siena Farms in Kentucky, as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale, purchasing him for $180,000 under Arroyo Bloodstock, agent for Arroyo Syndicate and Marcus Scott.

"I see them (Life Is Good progeny) that need more time. They're not small horses. They all have big physicals, and I believe they're going to go the distance," he said.

Multiple grade 1 winner and freshman sire Life Is Good stands at WinStar Farm for an advertised fee of $60,000. The 8-year-old son of Into Mischief  was represented by his first winner when Waggley won a maiden special weight race at Keeneland April 8 for trainer Wesley Ward.

Arroyo hit another home run when Hip 462, a speedy colt by Upstart , demanded $360,000 from Tatsuya Yoshioka. The colt impressed during his under-tack performance, blazing a furlong in :09 4/5.

"He's a beautiful horse, my Dad's favorite," Arroyo said. "I love that horse. Great physical. He has a very similar action on the track (top Hip 312). I believe he's going to do well at the races. I think he's going to be a big horse. I expect a lot from him."

Arroyo purchased the son of Upstart for $100,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm, and is out of the Songandaprayer mare Apalachee Song, who is a half sister to multiple grade 1 winner and 1999 champion sprinter Artax.

Arroyo will offer three juveniles during the third day of the OBS Spring sale, all of whom breezed a furlong in a sharp :09 4/5.

The first of his Day 3 offerings is Hip 703, a filly by Drain the Clock  out of the Kingmambo mare Dancing Alone, who is a full sister to grade 1 winner and millionaire Voodoo Dancer. Hip 703 is a half sister to graded stakes winner Dancing Solo and the grade 1-placed Dancing.

Hip 734 is a colt by Mo Donegal  out of the Bernardini mare Double Chocolate, who is a half sister to 2016 Canadian Derby (G3) winner Ready Intaglio, and hails from the family of 2021 champion female sprinter Ce Ce.

A Jack Christopher  colt, consigned as Hip 822, out of the Uncle Mo mare, Forced Family Fun, completes his lineup. All three juveniles are consigned by Britton Peak, agent.
