The family of Dr. William Joseph "Doc" Solomon, founder of Pin Oak Lane Farm announced that he died peacefully May 5 at the age of 84.
Solomon attended the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School, where he completed his veterinary training, pursuing his love for animals. He then moved to New Freedom, Pa., and, in 1973, established what would be his lifelong passion: Pin Oak Lane Farm and Equine Clinic, which offers complete services for the breeding of both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds in the Mid-Atlantic area, as well as helping clients buy and sell horses at Thoroughbred sales throughout the United States.
His accomplishments at Pin Oak Lane include raising 1992 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Lil E. Tee and 1989 Hambletonian winner Park Avenue Joe.
Pin Oak Lane currently has one stallion, 2017 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Cloud Computing. He stands for $3,500 in 2026.
To capture who Solomon was, his obituary reads, "Over Doc's 53 years at Pin Oak Lane, the farm became a landmark, and Doc, a well-known elder statesman. It was impossible to go to a restaurant without someone approaching him to introduce themselves as someone who had worked for him on the farm as a teenager—Doc was always ready to give a leg up to a young person who wanted to work and had an interest in horses or farm life."
