Pair of Breeders' Cup Winners Entered for Shawnee

Bob Baffert "not 100%" that he will run dual grade 1 winner Splendora May 30.

The distaff division appears wide open five months into the 2026 season, and the $300,000 Shawnee Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs May 30 could introduce a new leading contender.

The 1 1/16-mile race serves as a local prep for the $500,000 Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2) June 27, which offers an automatic berth to the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Keeneland Oct. 31 through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In. However, the Shawnee shouldn't be dismissed as just any other prep.

Two of the last three Shawnee winners have gone on to conquer the Distaff: Idiomatic swept both races in 2023 and Scylla took the 2024 Shawnee and 2025 Distaff. Those performances led to the Shawnee being elevated to grade 2 status this year.

The Breeders' Cup World Championships is hot on the minds of several connections entered Saturday, and two Breeders' Cup winners are among the entries. One of them is Immersive, whose 2024 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) triumph capped a trio of grade 1 victories that led to honors as Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly.

"I think we have to see her move forward a bit and see more from her at 4 than we did at 3 to give us the confidence to think we could get to the Breeders' Cup Distaff," trainer Brad Cox said. "That would be the goal with her given what she accomplished early on. That's the goal to get her back to the grade 1 level, and we're hoping this is the right step."

The Godolphin homebred's 3-year-old season did not go exactly as planned. Sidelined to start the year, she returned in June and was beaten a neck in a listed stakes at Churchill Downs, a race Cox felt like she needed. Then in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga Race Course in the summer, she was second but beaten 15 1/2 lengths by Scottish Lassie. She then returned to the win column at Churchill in September's Seneca Overnight Stakes before being shelved again.

Cox got the Nyquist  filly started this season over 7 furlongs in Aqueduct Racetrack's Distaff Stakes (G3) April 4. Although beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Grammy Girl, who returned a month later to win the Vagrancy Stakes (G3), Cox was pleased by the effort and felt it set her up well for chasing a return to the top level.

"I think she fits (in the distaff division) if we get her A races. I'm not sure we saw her A race last year," Cox said. "I thought it was a great race off the layoff and she's familiar with Churchill. Physically she looks as good as she's going to look. I'm very happy with how she's moving and the works leading up.

"I think it's great that Godolphin has kept her around. She gave us no reason to not press on with her as good as she looks and as well as she's training. I think that's big on Godolphin's behalf and it's good for racing. I'm excited about running her. I think we'll get a big effort out of her."

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. will take over Immersive's saddle for the first time breaking from the outside of the seven-horse field.

Baffert Unsure if He Will Run Splendora

The second Breeders' Cup winner entered hails from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert: 2025 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Splendora. She also has something to prove after having her five-race win streak snapped May 2 when running a disappointing fourth, beaten 10 1/2 lengths, as the even-money favorite in the 7-furlong Derby City Distaff (G1).

Another Baffert trainee, Usha, finished third in that same race and bounced back to win the Winning Colors Stakes (G3) May 25. However, while celebrating that victory in the Churchill Downs winner's circle, Baffert said he was not 100% certain he would actually run Boyd Racing and By Talla Racing's Splendora on Saturday.

"I'm not 100% that she'll run," Baffert said Monday while explaining he entered to see how the field came up.

Should Flavien Prat be given the opportunity to guide the 5-year-old Audible mare Saturday, he'll have to navigate stretching her out in distance. Splendora has only started twice beyond a mile in the spring of 2025, finishing second at the grade 2 level at both 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles.

Since then, her form improved to the best of her career until the Derby City, including a dominant 1-mile win in the Beholder Mile (G1) in March.

Reflecting on the defeat earlier this month, Baffert mentioned that she had gotten sick a few weeks before, but he wasn't sure if that was what knocked the fight out of her.

"I was really puzzled by her last race," Baffert said. "For some reason we didn't see the real Splendora. When I see that spark in her, then she'll run."

Another horse seeking redemption at the top level is Calumet Farm homebred Gin Gin. Runner-up in this race last year, the daughter of Hightail  looked to be a force to be reckoned with defeating champions Thorpedo Anna and Nitrogen in October's Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland, but has come nowhere close to repeating that effort in two starts since.

A well beaten seventh in the April 17 Doubledogdare Stakes (G2), trainer Brendan Walsh will aim for improvement in the second start of the year while breaking from the rail. Walsh also enters Twin Oaks Bloodstock's two-time stakes winner Miss Justify. The 5-year-old Justify  mare returned from an 11-month layoff May 1 to finish fourth in the La Troienne Stakes (G1) over the Shawnee's course and distance.

Hard Knocks Racing Partners' Take Charge Omaha also exits the La Troienne and looks to improve on her seventh-place finish for trainer Matthew Sims.

Shawnee a Graded Opportunity for Texas-Bred Too Much Kiki

A race like this also provides opportunities for horses like Mansfield Racing's Too Much Kiki. The multiple stakes-winning Texas-bred has only left her home state twice in her 19-race career, resulting in a 2023 allowance victory at Delta Downs and 2025 stakes triumph at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Racecourse.

With no upcoming options at home following a runner-up effort April 16 at Lone Star Park, trainer Bret Calhoun made the decision to move the 5-year-old Too Much Bling mare up to his Kentucky division. Training well and with the opportunity to run out of her own stall, he decided to see if she could add some graded credentials to the résumé.

"We just got her in this part of the country so we could spot her in different places," Calhoun said. "They're really nice horses (in the Shawnee), but a shorter field gives a good opportunity to maybe get some graded earnings on her."

Calhoun pointed to a January run in the Houston Ladies Classic (G3) at Sam Houston Race Park as a confidence booster to enter her in the Shawnee. Last at the start of the race, she had to race wide around the far turn and then alter path a bit in the stretch as eventual winner Perfect Shot came out. Too Much Kiki stayed on task and finished off the race, beaten 1 1/2 lengths in fourth while missing a graded placing by just a head.

"I thought she was the best horse that day and it gave me a little confidence to try a spot like this," Calhoun said. "Obviously, we'll try to place her in less aggressive places down the road but, since we're here, she's doing really good. She trains very, very well over this track. We'll give her a shot in here and hopefully get some graded earnings and maybe do a little better than that."

Drawing the rail in three of her previous four starts, Calhoun hopes breaking from post 6 of seven will benefit his mare who has a tendency to break slowly. Jose Ortiz is tasked with the ride.

"She's a big filly, and she's rarely quick from the gate," Calhoun said. "Being away sharp from the gate and getting a decent position early on is the key for her. She's always finished the races off well. She's always running down the lane."
