Harrodsburg's speed was on display in many of his first 18 starts, as it was June 27 in his 19th race in the $275,000 Bango Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. But so too was another attribute: his class.
The front-runner, who set the pace in the 6 1/2-furlong race with comfortable fractions of :22.90 and :45.36, turned back a stretch bid from a chasing Built and registered a half-length triumph, his first in a stakes race. Harrodsburg was timed at 1:15.95 for the distance over a main track rated sloppy by Equibase. The Luis Saez-ridden gelding paid $8.90 to win.
The win elevated the 6-year-old Constitution gelding's career record to 7-3-3 and his earnings to $670,387 for owners Rod and Bud Hatfield. In a prior stakes highlight, Harrodsburg ran third in the Dwyer Stakes (G3) as a 3-year-old in 2023.
"He's been a real project, but we're so proud of him," trainer Mike Tomlinson said. "He keeps improving, maturing with age, and just getting better."
Tomlinson credited his owners' patience for allowing him to work on behavioral issues with Harrodsburg and "physical issues here and there."
Built finished 3 lengths head of U Devil You in third. Morning-line favorite Cornucopian was scratched.
Twin Creeks Farm bred the winner in Kentucky out of the Exchange Rate mare Gracer. He is the second stakes winner for his dam, who also produced Rome, winner of the 2022 Prairie Mile Stakes.
