Closing relentlessly under Hall of Famer John Velazquez, American History caught race-favorites Coach Pope and Q B Rocket to win the Oct. 3 Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland.
The winner, who won by a length, ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.88 following taxing fractions of :23.52, :46.54, and 1:10.52 set by Q B Rocket under pressure from Coach Pope. American History paid $12 to win. Coach Pope outgamed Q B Rocket by a neck for second.
Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher trains American History, a 2-year-old son of Constitution , for owners WinStar Farm, First Go Racing and CHC.
With the Breeders' Futurity (G1) part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, American History earned a paid, automatic berth into the Oct. 30 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland. Runner-up Coach Pope and third-place Q B Rocket also appear to be candidates for that race.
The top five runners in the Breeders' Futurity also earned qualifying points toward next year's Kentucky Derby (G1), distributed on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
