Report from Japan

Will Take Charge

Will Take Charge

Anne M. Eberhardt

A total of 177 mares and fillies have been cataloged for JS Company's Broodmare Sale at Shizunai Oct. 21.

The catalog features consignments from leading breeders, led by Shadai Farm with 24 lots, followed by Darley Japan (14), Shiraoi Farm (12), and Shimokobe Farm (7).

Out of 155 mares currently in foal, five are carrying offspring by top 10 sires, including Saturnalia, Rey de Oro, and Le Vent Se Leve. Three of them are in foal to Siskin, the busiest sire at Shadai Stallion Station, who covered 224 mares during the 2026 breeding season.

In addition to the aforementioned stallions, four mares are offered in foal to Will Take Charge, four mares are in foal to Chuwa Wizard, and six mares are in foal to Hot Rod Charlie. They are currently ranked third, fourth, and fifth on Japan's freshman sires list, respectively.

Hip 4, Mozu Native, a 9-year-old mare by the United States' leading broodmare sire Bernardini, is being offered in foal to Mozu Ascot, a multiple group 1-winning son of Frankel .

In addition to in-foal broodmares, the catalog also includes broodmare prospects, such as Hip 38, T M Spada, a 7-year-old mare whose last start came Aug. 2 at Niigata. T M Spada has won six times in 32 career starts, including the 2022 CBC Sho (G3) and the 2023 Centaur Stakes (G2). She earned more than US$1.4 million for owner Masatsugu Takezono. The daughter of Red Spada set a Japan Racing Association record over 1,200 meters in 1:05.8 seconds when she won the CBC Sho.
