Breeders' Cup

Golden Tempo Among Deep Squad of Hot Prospects at BC

Maiden Watch: Breeders' Cup Edition

Anne M. Eberhardt

Led by grade 1 winners Golden Tempo and Knightsbridge , 19 BloodHorse Maiden Watch Hot Prospects are scheduled to compete in the Oct. 30-31 Breeders' Cup at Keeneland. Two additional prospects, Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) also-eligibles No Nay Hudson and Outfielder, could gain entry and add to the tally if scratches occur.

To qualify for BloodHorse Maiden Watch, a horse must break its maiden within its first five starts at age 2 or 3 (3-year-olds through June) and either sell for at least $500,000 at auction, be out of a graded stakes winner, or be a half sibling to one. BloodHorse research indicates horses that meet at least one of these qualifiers are more likely to become graded stakes winners. The Hot Prospects designation highlights qualifiers whose subsequent performances suggest additional potential.

Golden Tempo, a Curlin  colt out of graded stakes winner Carrumba, was highlighted after breaking his maiden at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots this winter. Owned and bred by Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable and trained by Cherie DeVaux, he went on to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) before finishing third in the Travers Stakes (G1).

Knightsbridge, a Godolphin homebred by Nyquist  out of Tyburn Brook, is a half brother to grade 1 sprinter Speaker's Corner . Trained by Bill Mott, he developed from a one-turn specialist into a route winner, capped by his victory in the 1 1/4-mile Pacific Classic Stakes (G1). He joins Golden Tempo in the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

Knightsbridge is 9-2 and Golden Tempo 5-1 in the Classic morning line, behind 2-1 favorite Forever Young and 5-2 second choice Sovereignty , Knightsbridge's stablemate.

Other Hot Prospects are prominent during Saturday's card. Ways and Means, owned by Klaravich Stables and trained by Chad Brown, is the 7-5 favorite for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1), and Further Ado , a Gun Runner  colt owned by Spendthrift Farm and trained by Brad Cox, is the 2-1 choice in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1). A Keeneland specialist, he won his maiden race there by 20 lengths last fall before capturing the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) by 11 lengths this spring.

Saturday's other representatives include Nooni in the Filly and Mare Sprint; Stradale in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1); Deterministic  in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T); and Burnham Square in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T).

Future Stars Friday Loaded With Prospects

Five Maiden Watch graduates are entered in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1): American History, Coach Pope, Damavand, Hughes, and Salahudin. All but Damavand have stakes experience.

Hughes, an unbeaten son of Into Mischief  trained by Bob Baffert, has won four starts, including the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and American Pharoah Stakes (G1).

Hughes and jockey Juan Hernandez win the Grade I, $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes, Saturday, October 3, 2026 at Santa Anita Park, Arcadia CA.<br>

American History, trained by Todd Pletcher, captured the Breeders' Futurity (G1) Oct. 3 after breaking his maiden by 7 3/4 lengths at Saratoga Race Course.

Coach Pope, trained by Kenny McPeek, finished second in the Breeders' Futurity after pressing a pace that proved too demanding.

Salahudin, an Uncle Mo colt trained by Baffert, enters off a victory in the Iroquois Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs.

Five more Maiden Watch graduates are entered in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1): Foxiest, Life Changing, Miss Monica, Scarlett Begonia, and Voyager.

Miss Monica, an unbeaten daughter of Early Voting trained by Baffert, won the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) by 6 1/4 lengths. Purchased for $850,000 earlier this year, she is the 5-2 second choice in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Foxiest, by Gun Runner, is out of 2019 champion 3-year-old filly and female sprinter and Covfefe. Life Changing, by Life Is Good , sold for $1,025,000 as a yearling and is a half sister to 2024 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Seize the Grey . Scarlett Begonia, also by Life Is Good, is a half sister to 2021 Mother Goose Stakes (G2) winner Zaajel. Voyager, by Justify , is out of graded stakes winner Chart.

Brickyard Belle, a Yaupon  filly purchased for $600,000 earlier this year, is unbeaten in two starts, including a victory in the Matron Stakes (G3T), and is entered in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1T).
