Englishman, the 4-5 favorite for the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) Oct. 31 at Keeneland, looked to have everything going his way as he rolled into the top of the stretch, but second-choice T O Elvis had other plans and blew past the favorite to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
The early fractions were predictably brisk and set by Englishman. The first point of call was :21.68 followed by a half in :44.42. The final time was 1:08.20. Liam Smith finished third.
T O Elvis, a 4-year-old son of Volatile owned by Tomoya Ozasa, was bred in Kentucky by Jeff and Melissa Prunzik. He is the first Japanese-based winner of the Sprint.
