Deterministic  delivered many firsts following his three-quarters of a length win Oct. 31 in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T), an accomplishment all its own for defeating last year's Mile winner Notable Speech.

The 5-year-old son Liam's Map  gave first Breeders' Cup World Championships victories to trainer Miguel Clemente, veteran jockey Kendrick Carmouche, and co-owner Ken Lagnone, who is a partner with Vinny Viola's St Elias Stables, Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable.

The emotional ties and rewards from Deterministic were already deep long before the Breeders' Cup. He became Clemente's first grade 1 winner in last year's Manhattan Stakes (G1T) following the loss of his father, Christophe, a Hall of Fame trainer who died in May 2025. Following the Manhattan, Deterministic then strung together four more consecutive graded stakes wins.

"He's meant the world to us and given us great happiness in a very dark part of our lives," Clement said. "So, it's very rewarding for us to have our first Breeders' Cup win with him. He's been top-class for two seasons now. I thought he was the best turf horse last year and has been this year, and I'm delighted to pull it off today."

Deterministic faced even-money favorite Notable Speech in his previous race, finishing second to the Godolphin homebred by 1 1/4 lengths in the Woodbine Mile (G1T).

Clemente said they were a bit unlucky at Woodbine but the dynamics in the Mile at Keeneland made all the difference.

"It was a real run race. There was pace and a full field," he said. "We were able to use his high cruising speed and that was a difference make. At every stage of the race today, I thought he was in control and looking amazing."

Deterministic started out in a stalking position, tracking third behind early leader Cabot Spirit and European challenger Puerto Rico. After 6 furlongs, he took charge and never yielded. Notable Speech was much farther back early on than he had been at Woodbine and that left him too much to do in the stretch. He made a valiant run, however, closing from three lengths back in mid-stretch to finish shy by less than a length at the wire.

"We are obviously disappointed to be beaten," said Notable Speech's trainer Charlie Appleby. "He could not get that forward pitch that you would have liked to have had. They didn't go as hard as they potentially could have done. There were good even fractions, but he was too far back. We all saw he was probably the best horse in the race with his acceleration."

Carmouche said he knew he was on the best horse in the Mile.

"Every step of the race, I thought he was the winner," the jockey said. "I am thankful to be on this stage to show my talent and let the horse turn the tables on such good European horses. I have faith in Miguel that he brought this horse maybe at 110% today.

"He left there with intentions. I put him in the race where we could make the pace a little fast for the first part, and then eased off of him. He felt right in my hands. He just flew home," he continued.

Cabot Spirit went the opening quarter in :23.31 and the half-mile in :47.01. When Deterministic took control, the time for 6 furlongs 1:10.80. The final time of the race was 1:34.52 and the Miguel Clement trainee paid $12.10 on a $2 win bet. Notable Speech was second 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Lake Forest in third.

Langone found himself in the Breeders' Cup winner's circle with the first horse he's ever owned. He gave special thanks to Viola and his partners for taking him along on the ride of lifetime. He also gave credit to Lane's End's Bill Farish for spending hours with him answering questions before he jumped into horses ownership.

"I can't believe it happened, but I'm glad it did," he said.

Viola said he was thrilled to have Langone as a partner, who he described as more than a friend, more like a brother, and important mentor. He then gave Clemente and Carmouche all the praise for getting such a brilliant performance from Deterministic.

"Miguel, you just executed one of the greatest training series and wins that I've ever been around," he said. "Kendrick, you rode the horse today with extreme confidence. When you own a horse and your jockey takes their horses up underneath them like that, it's a fantastic feeling."

Hinkle Farms bred Deterministic in Kentucky out of the winning Speightstown mare Giulio's Jewel. The mare has produced four winners from as many to race, and Deterministic is her first stakes winner. Deterministic is the second Breeders' Cup winner bred by the Paris, Ky., farm that produced More Than Looks, who won the 2024 Mile.
