Just days after hosting the Breeders' Cup World Championships, Keeneland will pivot from the racetrack to the sales ring, as it kicks off its prestigious November Breeding Stock Sale, held Nov. 3-11. Riding the high-stakes momentum of the Breeders' Cup, the catalog for the nine-day auction features more than 3,400 horses, including Breeders' Cup participants and half siblings to multiple Breeders' Cup winners. The sale includes broodmares, broodmare/racing prospects, and weanlings, as well as four dispersals.

"It's extra special (to hold the Breeders' Cup and the sale). It sort of personifies who we are and what we do," said Tony Lacy, vice president of sales at Keeneland. "We're a racetrack, but the engine of it all is the sale ring.

"The Breeders' Cup is what it says in the box; the breeders get to capitalize on the fact that the focus of the industry is at Keeneland. They get to showcase the best of their produce with us and they're proud of it. It's something we feel a lot of gratitude for because the team puts in a ton of work to make sure the Breeders' Cup goes as planned.

The Breeders' Cup produced many exciting updates for horses cataloged in the sale, including Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) runner-up Foie Gras. The 4-year-old daughter of Volatile  hit her stride this year for trainer Mike Maker. She is a three-time stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed. She will be offered as Hip 80 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

"It's the same team whether it's sales or racing. We take great pride when it goes well and we take great pride in seeing these fillies and the siblings or close connections to Breeders' Cup participants as they come in the lower barns and are getting ready to be offered to the public," Lacy said.

Keeneland will also offer a weanling full brother to Foie Gras as Hip 669. He will be consigned by breeder Beau Lane Bloodstock.

Lane's End, agent, will offer a half sister in She's Very Demure as Hip 1461. The 3-year-old daughter of Vekoma  is offered in foal to Up to the Mark .

"(Foie Gras) ran huge and I think she's just coming into herself really well," Lacy said. "She's one that has shown form in the past but really stepped up and gave them a shot in the arm here.

"It's wonderful when things come together like that for the connections. Beau Lane was a breeder of a graded stakes winner during the meet, and we take great pride. We celebrate him and we enjoy every graded stakes winner during the meet, and to watch him enjoy that, that is what makes this work.

"With him and (daughter) J.B. (Orem) and Michael, watching them and the Hinkles (who bred Breeders' Cup Mile winner Deterministic) enjoying the success as breeders, they're great clients. They're some of many that you just cannot stop cheering for. Beau is a legend."

Scott Mallory will offer a weanling half brother (Hip 112) to impressive Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) winner Bacio. The colt, from the first crop of grade 1 winner Arabian Knight , was bred in Kentucky by Torie Gladwell, Cincinnati Equine, Borrowdale, and Knollwood Farm.

Bacio also has a half sister, Fate of Ophelia (Curlin ) (Hip 75), offered in foal to multiple grade 1 winner Sierra Leone . Taylor Made Sales, agent, consigns the 8-year-old mare.

Another Breeders' Cup winner with a half sibling on offer is Emphatic, who capped a perfect 4-for-4 juvenile season with a clear victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Persuasive, a 4-year-old filly by Omaha Beach , will be offered as a broodmare prospect by Gainesway, agent.

Brian Graves, general manager of Gainesway, said traffic has been heavy at the barns and he is cautiously optimistic heading into the next nine days of selling.

"I don't see any reason that the market should stop or take a step back at this point," Graves said.

The Puma, who put in an impressive effort to finish second to Sovereignty  in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), will have two special connections on offer: his dam, Eve of War (Hip 65), who sells in foal to Sierra Leone, and a weanling half brother by Practical Joke  (Hip 66). Both horses will be consigned by Hidden Brook Farm, agent.

Other high-profile Breeders' Cup connections include Hip 76, an Into Mischief  half sister to Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) runner-up Englishman, who will be consigned by Frankfort Park Farm, agent, in foal to Mindframe ; and Egyptian Bride (Hip 827), a Pioneerof the Nile half sister to Breeders' Cup Sprint winner T O Elvis. She is offered in foal to Chancer McPatrick  and consigned by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, agent.

"What's really important is recency in pedigrees. It's lovely to get these updates," Lacy said.

Keeneland will offer four grade 1-winning mares as racing or broodmare prospects at the sale, two of which ran in the Breeders' Cup and finished a respectable fourth in their divisions.

Expensive Queen, winner of the Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1T) and fourth-place finisher in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1T), will be consigned as Hip 243 by Taylor Made Sales, agent. She is a 4-year-old daughter of one of the most prominent broodmare sires in Europe, Lope de Vega , who is the broodmare sire of Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) winner Benvenuto Cellini.

"We celebrated a grade 1 win with the Knelmans earlier in the year and now for the filly to come back through the sales ring, just a few yards from where they celebrated in the winner's circle, hopefully they're able to celebrate again tomorrow with a positive result," Lacy said.

Mark Taylor, president and CEO of Taylor Made, said he believes the mare could be primed for a massive 2027 season.

"It was a big day for her and she really solidified her résumé and showed that she was an elite-level filly," Taylor said. "I think (trainer) Brendan Walsh truly believes she could be a champion next year. She's sound, she loves training, loves her job."

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint fourth and last year's Test Stakes (G1) winner Kilwin will be offered as Hip 114 by Royal Oak Farm, agent for BBN Racing and Rick Howard. The daughter of Twirling Candy  is a Keeneland favorite, as she is trained by Keeneland's all-time leading trainer by total wins, Rusty Arnold.

"Kilwin trains here (at Keeneland). There's a lot to be proud of from a Keeneland perspective," Lacy said.

The final grade 1-winning racing/broodmare prospect on offer during Book 1 is Thought Process, who won the Gamely Stakes (G1T) at Santa Anita Park, and 2025 La Brea Stakes (G1) winner Usha.

Thought Process, a 4-year-old daughter of Collected , was bred by the late Brereton C. Jones of Airdrie Stud. She will be offered as Hip 229 by Airdrie Stud, agent. Usha (Hip 248) is a Tiz the Law  filly bred in New York by Esler and Raine and will be offered by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, agent.

Lacy said having the Breeders' Cup at home base has certainly made a positive impact.

"We've seen people that haven't been to Keeneland or even Kentucky before," he explained. "Keeneland has become a bit of a bucket-list destination for some and especially for anyone in the industry. As the industry gets more globally interconnected, we're seeing that these types of events, including the sales, become a part of people's calendars."

The nine-day sale will feature four dispersals, including the complete dispersal of Aaron and Marie Jones, which will be handled by Taylor Made Sales; the complete breeding stock dispersal of Earle Mack, handled by Denali Stud; the dispersal of Starship Stables, handled by Taylor Made; and the complete dispersal of W. Bruce Lunsford, handled by Claiborne Farm.

Aaron and Marie Jones built a long-lasting legacy over the years, which was recently on display with last year's champion 2-year-old male Ted Noffey. The son of Into Mischief won three grade 1 races at 2, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1).

"Aaron and Marie Jones, they have a legacy of producing incredible horses over the years," Lacy said. "I give credit, obviously, to the Joneses and the legacy they've created, but also in conjunction with Frank and Katie Taylor, because of the close association over the years.

"It's always tough seeing a broodmare program wrapping up, but it also gives an opportunity to someone else to get access to bloodlines that potentially would not have been offered before."

The sale will offer one of the first looks at the progeny of many first-year sires, such as Arabian Knight, Cogburn , Domestic Product , Dornoch , Gun Pilot , Kingsbarns , Muth , National Treasure , Newgate , Prince of Monaco , and Seize the Grey , among others.

"The world is here. We've seen a ton of people from around the world who were at the races," Lacy said. "They're enthusiastic. They're very complimentary on the quality of stock out there; I think especially our weanlings. They seem to be going over very well."

Last year's November sale saw grade 1 winner Lush Lips top the sale at $3.7 million when selling to Dixiana Farm. Eighteen horses sold for $1 million or more. The top-priced weanling of the sale was a Gun Runner  colt who brought $2.2 million.

A total of 1,986 horses sold for a record gross of $246,042,400, including private sales. The average price was $123,888 and the median was $60,000.

The leading buyer of the sale was Raging Torrent Syndicate, which purchased five horses for $5,225,000. The leading consignor was Taylor Made Sales, which sold 259 from its draft for gross receipts of $42,184,400.

The action will begin with Book 1 at Keeneland, beginning Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET. Hips 1-271 are slated to head to the ring. As of Monday evening, Keeneland had reported 67 outs for the first session.

"There's a great sense of optimism and buzz," Lacy said. "We didn't have to travel. The Breeders' Cup, I think it's concentrated through the sale grounds, which is wonderful."
