Harper's Corner, a first-time starter by Darley Stallions' freshman sire Speaker's Corner , survived a chaotic start in a maiden special weight June 12 at Laurel Park to become her sire's first winner.
The filly raced by owner Charles Biggs and trainer Cathal Lynch avoided a chain reaction of swerving and bumping after the break that led to a stewards' inquiry after the finish of the 5-furlong race. Ultimately, the order of finish was left unchanged, and Harper's Corner's impressive victory by 7 3/4 lengths became official. Her final time was :59.79 on the fast main track.
Bishop Racing bred Harper's Corner out of the Speightstown daughter Toscana, who is also the dam of Italian stakes-placed winner Tenjaku (Kantharos ). Toscana is out of the grade 3 winner Nikkis Smartypants (Smarty Jones), whose own dam is a half sister to multiple grade 1 winner Diamondrella and grade 1-placed stakes winner Bonnie Blue Flag.
Harper's Corner was sold for $30,000 by Lane's End as agent at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale to David McKathan's Grassroots Training and Sales. McKathan then sold the filly through the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale for $70,000 to Biggs.
Speaker's Corner is an 8-year-old son of Street Sense who was bred and raced by Godolphin. He won at 2, was stakes-placed at 3, and then became a multiple graded stakes winner at 4. His best performance was a victory in the 2022 Carter Handicap (G1). He also finished third in that year's Metropolitan Handicap (G1). He stands for $10,000.
