Hot Rod Honey became the initial stakes winner for Ocala Stud's first-crop sire Roadster  with a striking 4 1/4-length victory in the $96,500 Sharp Susan Stakes July 3 at Gulfstream Park.

The dark bay/brown filly stalked the pace in third over the opening quarter-mile of the 5 1/2-furlong race before moving into second on the turn. Advancing up the rail, she reeled in the drifting-out leader Colombina inside the furlong marker and powered clear late under Leonel Reyes. Hot Rod Honey hit the wire in a final time of 1:06.24 following fractions of :22.17 and :45.90 established by Colombina on a fast main track. The winner, now 2-for-2, paid $6 for a $2 wager.

Colombina held second, 2 lengths ahead of Elegante Miz in third. Favored Boots ran fourth.

Carlos David trains Hot Rod Honey for owners Troy Johnson, Wendell Yates and Robert Fritts. She was bred in Florida by the estate of Brereton C. Jones out of the unraced Unified  mare Go Together.

Weston Thoroughbreds, agent for Johnson, bought her as a weanling for $27,000 from the Airdrie Stud consignment to the 2024 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Roadster, the fourth-leading first-crop sire in North America and Florida's leading freshman sire through July 2, won the 2019 Santa Anita Derby (G1) in his top racing achievement. He was also runner-up in three graded stakes, including the 2019 Malibu Stakes (G1), and was third in the 2018 Del Mar Futurity (G1).

He stood for $7,500 earlier this year at Ocala Stud.
