Michael Burns

Multiple graded stakes winner By My Standards  sired his first stakes winner Aug. 30 when King's Counsel took the Simcoe Stakes at Woodbine by three-quarters of a length.

The 2-year-old Ontario-bred gelding is owned and trained by Barbara Minshall, who purchased him as a yearling for $59,126 at the 2025 Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale. He was bred by Bernard and Karen McCormack out of the stakes-placed Rahy mare, Queen Martha.

A maiden as he was loaded into the starting gates, King's Counsel bumped with Prince Shaman and settled behind the front runners under Daisuke Fukumoto, through fractions of :22.33 and :44.97. He swung wide coming into the turn and gained a narrow lead in mid-stretch, showing his greenness by drifting in and out slightly, but held off Longshot Leo, who finished second by a head over the favorite Souper Survivor in third.

The final time for the race was 1:17.32. King's Counsel paid $5.50 to win.

Making his fourth start, King's Counsel finished second last time out in a maiden special weight behind the highly regarded filly De la Renta, who went on to defeat males in the Aug. 15 Soaring Free Stakes at Woodbine.

By My Standards won nearly $3 million during his four-year career with a record of 7-5-1 from 17 career starts. Four of his wins came in graded stakes company.

The son of Goldencents  stood the 2026 season at Spendthrift Farm near Lexington for an advertised fee of $5,000.
