Nitrogen Looks to Add to Splendid Season in BC Distaff

Currently fourth in NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll, she has earned more than $3 million.

Based solely on what happened the last time Nitrogen and Fully Subscribed faced each other, it would be an exaggeration to call their matchup in the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Keeneland a "showdown."

On that June 5 afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, Nitrogen ran a hole in the wind and cruised to a smashing victory in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1), as Fully Subscribed checked in second a lengthy 12 3/4 lengths behind.

But much has changed in one regard since then.

D. J. Stable's homebred Nitrogen, the champion 3-year-old filly and Distaff runner-up in 2025, was then a stellar second behind reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty  while facing the top older males in the Aug. 8 Whitney Stakes (G1). The Medaglia d'Oro filly prepped for the $2 million Distaff with an easy, front-running, 2 3/4-length victory in the Sept. 25 Beldame Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park for trainer Mark Casse.

"We're really happy with where she's at right now," the American and Canadian Hall of Fame trainer said. "The timing is good. We kind of had a plan and it worked out well."

Currently fourth in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Top Thoroughbred Poll, she remains as good as ever after 18 races with nine wins, six seconds, and three thirds with earnings of slightly more than $3 million.

The change has come from Klaravich Stables' Fully Subscribed.

Since the Ogden Phipps, she has reeled off three straight wins for trainer Chad Brown.

She won the Shuvee Stakes (G2) by a half-length over multiple grade 1 winner Scottish Lassie and then authored her version of the Ogden Phipps, rocketing to a 9 3/4-length victory over the aforementioned Scottish Lassie in the Aug. 29 Personal Ensign Stakes (G1).

The daughter of Tiz the Law  then shipped to Keeneland and notched a 3 1/4-length victory in the Oct. 4 Spinster Stakes (G1) at the same 1 1/8-mile distance as the Distaff.

That's two wins by a combined 13 lengths in grade 1 company her last two starts.

Get the popcorn ready. There will indeed be a showdown in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

"It's going to be really interesting. Chad's filly has gotten really good since we beat up on her at Saratoga," Casse said. "I think she's a different horse."

Brown cannot find fault for the Ogden Phipps, but believes his filly is at her best for the rematch in a race that will decide the Eclipse Award for the champion older dirt filly or mare, one way or another.

"It was lopsided the last time we faced each other and Fully Subscribed didn't run her 'A' race. That's the only time she hasn't fired a really good race for us. I don't have an excuse for it. She's run really good races since then and I'm hopeful she will run one of her better races in the Distaff," Brown said about the 4-year-old filly bred by Payson Stud in Kentucky. "Her last couple of races have been outstanding and if she runs to them she will be very competitive."

Like Nitrogen, Fully Subscribed has never finished worse than third in 10 career starts with six wins, three seconds, and one third with earnings of $1.4 million.

Unlike Nitrogen, who was second in last year's Spinster, Fully Subscribed has a win on the main track at Keeneland, but Brown says the Spinster was beneficial beyond introducing the filly to the racing surface.

"In some cases, it is very, very helpful for a horse to have a race over the track. In other cases, not so much. I've shipped in and won grade 1 races, so I don't want to overplay that and make it sound like she has an advantage," Brown said. "With her, it was the spacing between the big number she ran in the Personal Ensign. It gave us five weeks and it was a grade 1. I wanted a little more recovery time from that number. I don't mind the four-week turnaround from the Spinster to the Distaff because I don't have to ship. The Spinster also helped give her a stronger foundation. The bonus is that it's a race over the track."

Other contenders include last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Super Corredora, who won the Zenyatta Stakes (G2) Sept. 27 at Santa Anita Park off a long layoff, and Eunomia, who took the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1) in her last race Aug. 1 at Del Mar.

Immersive, third in the Spinster Stakes last time out; Regaled, winner of the Delaware Handicap (G3) on a muddy track Oct. 3 at Delaware Park; and Measure, third in the Cotillion Stakes (G1) Sept. 19 at Parx Racing, round out the field of seven, after the scratches of Splendora and Scottish Lassie.

The loss of Splendora could change the complexion of the race as the Bob Baffert trainee had won her last two races on the lead.
