The first reported foals by 2022 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Rich Strike were both born April 27 in New York.
Eric Reed, the trainer of Rich Strike, and his wife Margaret Lynn bred one of the new foals, a filly out of the winning Kitten's Joy mare Dee Dee B. The mare is a daughter of French group 3 winner Marypop, who is by Layman.
Reed claimed Dee Dee B for Larry Rogers in 2024 and she wound up her three-year racing career with three consecutive wins. The Rich Strike filly is the mare's first foal and was born at Irish Hill Century Farm near Stillwater, N.Y., where the stallion stands for Irish Hill and Dutchess Views Stallions.
Rich Strike stands for a syndicate team that has worked diligently to acquire mares to breed to the stallion in New York. The syndicate includes Kentucky owners and others who are new to the New York breeding industry, according to Reed.
The other Rich Strike foal is a colt out of Orma, a winning daughter of Posse, and was bred by Daniel Charles Snyder. Orma is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Princess Jenny, who is out of multiple New York stakes winner Princess Dixie (Dixie Brass).
Rich Strike is a 7-year-old son of Keen Ice and out of the grade 3 winner and 2005 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Gold Strike. He stands for $6,500.
